Real estate brokers have these great services that allow you to search for homes that meet your interest, save them on a list, and have houses that fit your criteria emailed to you daily I've been using these to get an idea about what's available in different neighborhoods at what cost. When I start getting close to purchase time I'll post my faves here :)

This is the most likely candidate.. provided it's not falling apart. 4 bedrooms, 1 1/2 bathrooms.
and the most crucial of all features for an urban dwelling... off street parking. It's less than $75,000. It's not a "great" neighborhood. Although after having a kid in school
around the corner from this house for a year and feeling quite content in the area I'm willing to take my chances, especially since I can afford it. If this was the deal the piti payment would
be less than my current rent, leaving me money for updates, security etc. I don't "need" 4 bedrooms, but I love the idea of an art room/studio and a room for cats who need to be
sequestered. The house is not huge, although it's double the size of the rental I'm squished into. The con on this one is that it's currently rented, and the tenants have got to go.

This one is actually a little bigger than the first one, it's listed as a 3 bedroom but it has the same number of rooms what I don't know is if there is off street parking or the potential for off street parking... that will make a big difference. At less than $70,000 I can probably overlook the paneling and just plan to do the walls over the next few years... the fear of course is ... what the heck is under that paneling. It's also a little further off the edge of the neighborhood making walking to work and the kiddo's school a little less convenient.. one of the pluses of moving into the less than luxury community is how close it is to work.
